In a cooperation between the project partners ICD University of Stuttgart – Prof. A. Menges, ITKE University of Stuttgart – Prof. J. Knippers, State Garden Show Wangen 2024 and Blumer Lehmann, an innovative observation tower was developed for the State Garden Show. Blumer Lehmann was involved in the development of the execution details and production methods and took over the production and erection of the building as general contractor. The project is worldwide the first walk-in tower that uses curved wooden components made of crosslaminated timber, which form themselves through the natural shrinkage process of the wood. As a large-scale demonstrator, the tower is intended to show the innovative use of wood as a building material at the State Garden Show. It was built within three days from six prefabricated components. The height of 22 m and the location on a hill represent a structural challenge. The tower should be environmentally friendly and light in construction and materials. At the same time, the construction must
withstand high wind loads.
Sustainability is also at the forefront of the observation tower’s foundation with a base area of 50 m2: recycled concrete and CO2-reduced cement were used. The rear-ventilated outer skin consists of vertically attached, 20 mm thick, solid wood panels made of larch. A steel staircase with 113 steps leads to the tower‘s viewing platform.
